Contract automation cut charter party drafting time in half.

Howe Robinson Partners’ brokers were spending around 8 hours on each charter party. We built an AI contract automation system that does the drafting groundwork, bringing the time down to about 4 hours, with brokers reviewing every draft.

What is contract automation for charter parties?

Contract automation uses AI to prepare contracts from your data and templates instead of building them by hand. For charter parties, the contracts between shipowners and charterers, it drafts from the fixture recap, past clauses and the company’s own templates, and a broker reviews and signs off the result. In shipping, it is also called charter party automation or CP automation.

The problem: charter parties built by hand

Brokers had to build each charter party by hand. They copied clauses, searched older contracts for the right wording, and checked the document against a template.

Each draft took around 8 hours. It was slow, repetitive work, and every hour spent on paperwork was an hour away from negotiating deals.

What we built: AI contract automation for charter parties

We built an AI contract drafting system that works inside Howe Robinson’s own environment, so its documents stay within its infrastructure.

The system starts with the fixture recap, finds relevant clauses in past charter parties, and prepares a draft using the company’s templates. A broker reviews and signs off on every draft.

Contract automation questions brokers ask

Does AI replace the broker?

No. Automated contract drafting handles the groundwork: it starts from the fixture recap, finds relevant clauses in past charter parties and prepares a draft from the company’s templates. A broker reviews and signs off on every draft, so the terms and the final say stay with the people negotiating the deal.

Where do the documents stay?

Inside Howe Robinson’s own environment. The contract automation system was built to work within the company’s infrastructure, so its charter parties, past clauses and templates stay within its own systems while drafts are prepared, reviewed and signed off by its brokers.

How much time does contract automation save?

For Howe Robinson Partners, drafting time per charter party dropped from around 8 hours to about 4, a 50% cut. Each draft saves about 4 hours, and brokers spend that time reviewing the terms and negotiating deals instead of searching for and copying clauses.

Can it work with our own templates?

Yes. The system prepares each draft using the company’s own templates and the clauses from its past charter parties, so drafts stay consistent with the wording the team already trusts. A broker then reviews and signs off every draft before it is used.
